To take up a teaching assistant (TA) job no formal qualifications are needed. However, some qualifications will demonstrate a theoretical understanding of the role or achievements in the level of experience.
- Inexperienced TAs can take Level 2 and Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools, which will give them a good grounding in their career. They can be taken even when not working as a TA.
- To take the Certificate or Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools you must be working in education jobs within a school.
- The Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) again requires on-going work in a school, and is designed to give experienced TAs recognition and extra responsibilities.
There are other qualifications, such as a foundation degree in teaching assistance. The three above are good as they show the importance of experience and that teaching assisting can be a career choice with potential and recognition.
